Mountainous provinces will take the initiative in responding to flash floods, landslides, etc... through online warning maps.

Having been approved by the Prime Minister in 2012, the project entitled "Surveying, assessment and partition oflandslide risk in mountainous regions of Vietnam" is the first project to build an online mapping system based onopen source software.

Till date, the Institute of Geosciences and Minerals has completed the map of landslide status in 15 mountainous provinces in the North including Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Son La, Lai Chau, Dien Bien, Cao Bang, Bac Kan, Tuyen Quang, Ha Giang, Bac Giang, Hoa Binh and Lang Son. The project has also completed the mapping and partition of warning zones in 7 provinces including Nghe An, Thanh Hoa, Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Lai Chau, Dien Bien and Son La. It has handed over to four provinces including Nghe An, Thanh Hoa, Lao Cai and Yen Bai.

Currently the scheme has developed an online mapping system (also called WebGIS system) from open source software to disseminate and share the findings of the scheme in the fastest way to users, while collecting and updating landslide status from authorities and local people.

As a result, for the first time 14 mountainous provinces in the North have been able to anticipate landslides in their localities, thanks to a set of maps prepared by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.
