Vietnam assists Laos in developing mapping data for planning, socio-economic development and natural resources and environmentmonitoring

Product hand-over ceremony in the first 6 months of 2017

The Socialist Republic of Vietnam has funded the project “Building baseline terrain database for planning, socio-economic development and monitoring of natural resources and environment of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic”for the Government of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic with the coordination of the Department of Survey, Mapping and Geographic Information of Vietnam and Laos National Bureau of Mapping since 2014.

With this project, Vietnam assisted Lao People’s Democratic Republic in building a topographical map system and baseline terrain database for the North and Central Lao to establish a modern, accurate and open topographical database covering Lao PDR for socio-economic development planning, territorial management, natural resources monitoring and environmentalprotection.

According to Mr. Phan Duc Hieu – Director of Vietnam Department of Survey, Mapping and Geographic Information, the Department has actively directed the units with the most modern technology equipment and specialized technicians who have high professional experience in the field of geodesy and cartography in Vietnam to participate in the project and have handed over each module of the project to the National Geographic Department of Lao PDR since 2015.

In the first 6 months of 2017, the Department of Survey, Mapping and Geographic Information of Vietnam completed and handed over 116 pieces of maps for printing, 59 pieces of satellite imagery, 210 pieces of Laos administrative boundary and Laos borders with Vietnam, China, Thailand, Myanmar...to the National Geographic Department of Lao PDR.Until the end of 2017, all outcomes of the project will be handed over. The units of two departments will continue to checkthe acceptance of each work item of the project.
