Seek solutions for comprehensive climate change response to the Mekong Delta

Government leaders and ministers chaired the conference

On the first day of the conference on sustainable and climate-resilient development of the Mekong Delta in Can Tho City - September 26th, many discussions took place to seek strategic solutions for the region to deal with climate change in the future.

Attending the conference were more than 600 delegates, including representatives from central ministries and departments, leaders of 14 provinces and cities in the Mekong Delta region, many countries in the world, international organizations, independent experts and businesses.

The conference will discuss comprehensive issues such as master planning and infrastructure development for the Mekong Delta; challenges and solutions for water resources management in the Mekong Delta; orientation to the large-scale transformation of Mekong Delta development model; clean water security in the Mekong Delta in the context of climate change, sea level rise; solutions to sustainable agriculture conversion for sub-areas in the Mekong Delta, orientation to irrigation for sustainable development of Mekong Delta in adaptation to climate change.

Deputy Prime Minister Vuong Dinh Hue delivered the opening speech

Speaking at the opening of the conference on September 9th, Deputy Prime Minister Vuong Dinh Hue said that before the challenge of climate change, it is necessary to shape the transformation of Mekong Delta development model towards sustainability.

Regarding the importance of the conference, Deputy Prime Minister affirmed that the Government and the Prime Minister hold this conference with a vision of a sustainable and prosperous Mekong Delta – which is closely linked with key economic regions in terms of of the whole country and the Mekong sub-region, based on the transformation of the socio-economic development model in general and of each field in particular, ensuring the inheritance of previous and traditional development achievements and the precious culture combined with the application of modern science and technology of the world in accordance with the practical conditions of our country.

This conference aims at analyzing and identifying more adequately the challenges of climate change, the internal development of the Mekong Delta, the activities of using water resources in the upstream.

At the same time, it forecasts major impacts trend, identify short-term and long-term opportunities as a basis for shaping the Mekong Delta development model and major transformation directions.

In particular, experts will discuss and propose innovative breakthrough policy mechanisms to take advantage of the opportunity to transform the challenges,which promotes the transition and sustainable development of the Mekong Delta. Accordingly, it is necessary to focus on land, taxation, market creation, investment promotion, science and technology, human resource training and development.

Identify priority projects, groups of tasks, programs, projects and schemes with appropriate resources and roadmaps for implementation in the overall development of the whole region with the participation of the parties including government,local authority and international organizations, especially people and businesses in the Mekong Delta and neighboring areas - especially Ho Chi Minh City, also an important target.

Deputy Prime Minister Vuong Dinh Hue met with international partner

On the occasion of this important conference, on behalf of the Government of Vietnam, Deputy Prime Minister Vuong Dinh Hue called on international donors and organizations to continue to pay attention and provide adequate technical and financial support to the Mekong Delta. “I also propose to further promote the role of the Mekong River Commission, strengthen the sharing of information, management and sustainable use of water resources among the Mekong countries for general prosperity of the area. I strongly suggest the active participation of the business community and the people in promoting national pride and self-reliant tradition; overcoming difficulties, hardship and wisdom of the Vietnamese people for sustainable development of the Mekong Delta in particular and the country in general ...
