 HCM City loses nearly $780 million in floods(11/03/2010)
HCM City has hundreds of flooded sites in the inner city caused by flood tides and rains. The city also has a dozen dike-bursting incidents in outlying areas each year. Total losses caused by floods are estimated at over 14 trillion dong (nearly $780 million) a year. Floods cause great losses to the city, directly and indirectly, according to a research work from the Institute for Irrigation and Environment.

HCMC’s Center for Urban Flood Control will continue work on 11 key projects citywide to reduce flooding by 40%, an official from the center said.  Blocked drains cause flooding (08/03/2010)
Some land areas in South Sai Gon as well as canals and tributaries in the outskirts of HCM City have been improperly filled, causing flooding in many areas in the city, according to the Institute of Environmental Management and Science and Technology. In HCM City, the high demand for land to build infrastructure and new urban areas has led to the filling of these waterways, with 2,600ha already filled over the years to build the South Sai Gon urban zone in the Phu My Hung area.
